Ohio

The Bobcats are on a roll and looking to keep it going on the road this weekend.  After losing their MAC opener against Toledo they have rattled off three conference wins in a row and if they can make it four they will tied for first in the East Division with Miami.  They rolled over Akron last week but everyone has done that this year.  Can they do it against better competition?

The Bobcats are definitely committed to the run.  They average 170 yards per game on the ground and amazingly already have 5 runners with more than 100 yards on the season.  The most successful runner thus far has been junior QB Phillip Bates.  Boo Jackson is the starter but Bates is a pretty good changeup averaging more than 8 yards per carry.  Bates has thrown 18 passes on the year but with 2 interceptions, no TDs and a completion percentage below 50% he is not fooling anybody when he comes into the game.

The series between these conference rivals has swung to Ohio lately.  They have won each of the last four going a perfect 4-0 ATS as well.  Only one of those games was closer than 10 points and last year’s victory was the biggest for the Bobcats as they covered easily with a 21 point victory.  Ohio is one of the steadiest teams in the conference while Miami has been up and down.

Miami

The Redhawks are hoping that 2010 is the start of a renaissance as they haven’t won this many games since 2007.  This may not be the juggernaut team of 2003 that was led by Ben Roethlisberger but they are definitely improved in coach Mike Haywood’s second season.  They are a perfect 3-0 in the conference and all their losses are to BCS teams, very respectable like.

Miami is led by sophomore QB Zac Dysert.  He loves to play pitch and catch with Armand Robinson.  Robinson is fourth in the nation with 59 catches but they need some more big plays as he averages only 10 yards a catch with only three touchdowns.   Miami is a spread team but doesn’t have a lot of playmakers.  They dink and dunk down the field and sometimes have problems sustaining drives after a couple of first downs.

Before Ohio turned the tide the Redhawks owned the Bobcats.  They had won the 6 previous meetings outright and were 5-1 ATS in those contests.  This is a good test to see whether Miami has actually improved or is just taking advantage of a down year in the MAC.  If it is the former they should beat a team like Ohio on their home field.  If it is the latter a loss and perhaps a bad one is in the offing.

The Pick: I am just not sold yet on Miami and Ohio is so consistent.  This game should be pretty close throughout with the Bobcats on the winning side of the ledger.
